By the numbers: middle office outsourcing shows no sign of slowing

Middle office outsourcing shows no sign of slowing

The alternative investment industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Hedge funds and other alternative asset managers are increasingly recognizing that outsourcing middle office functions is no longer a fringe strategy – it's becoming a competitive necessity. This shift reflects a broader industry-wide acknowledgment that managing complex operations in-house, while simultaneously competing for alpha and talent, has become unsustainable.

Pressure points driving change

Alternative fund managers currently face a perfect storm of operational challenges. Rising costs, intense competition for alpha, and the complexity of managing multiple strategies across different legal entities have forced managers to fundamentally rethink their operational footprints. Nowhere is this more visible than in middle office, where managers must maintain robust risk management frameworks, handle increasingly complex instruments, and scale operations without proportionally increasing headcount.

This challenge is especially pronounced for multi-strategy managers, one of the largest sectors within the wider hedge fund universe. According to a recent survey by AFI, 58% of multi-strategy managers are now seeking external middle office partners to improve cost and efficiency – a clear signal that the industry recognizes outsourcing as a viable solution to these mounting pressures.

The operational burden has intensified as instrument complexity grows. With more managers allocating to derivatives, structured products, and cross-border securities, the demands of trade confirmation, settlement oversight, margin call volumes, and exception management have become overwhelming for in-house teams already stretched across multiple asset classes and time zones. This is precisely the kind of high-volume, process intensive work that benefits from specialist scale.

By the numbers – what the data shows

The market response has been clear to see. Demand for outsourced middle office solutions has climbed annually every year since Citco started producing quarterly reports, be that for treasury, collateral or trade operations functions.

For example, in 2023, Citco’s treasury client base stood at around 380 firms, and today that figure is 70% higher, at 645. The volumes going through the middle office platforms have jumped even more, with Q3 2026’s margin volumes for collateral more than double what they were in 2023, and the number of trade operations trades more than 200% higher.

Where next – middle office in 2030

The same research from AFI found that 89% of multi-strategy managers were deploying AI tools in their middle office, and while this research was focused on a specific type of manager, our middle office team at Citco is seeing this play out regardless of the investment strategy.

AI is expected to become even more prevalent in the coming years, fundamentally reshaping middle-office operations by automating complex workflows, collapsing traditional operational silos, and shifting the focus from manual data handling to exception management.

Whether AI is used or not, managers now operate in a more fluid environment with increased uncertainty, demanding strong strategic foresight, operational efficiency, modern technological infrastructure, and a fresh approach to data management.

Some periods in markets will be more volatile than others, but by outsourcing non-core middle office functions to specialists, managers can concentrate on what truly matters: alpha generation and portfolio management.

We expect to see an acceleration in outsourcing from here as tighter rules around the trade and settlement lifecycle – something that is already playing out in North America following the switch to T+1 settlement in North America – are brought in elsewhere.

For managers contemplating how best to move forward in this environment, it remains key to assess the ability of service providers to integrate with existing in-house teams, work within established workflows, and scale up or down as a firm's needs evolve.
